The Museum of London

Last week we visited the Museum of London to look at the exhibits on the Fire of London.We took part in a drama called Fire,Fire with an excellent actress.She made the story come to life for us, and we helped her fight the fire, and blow up the houses with gunpowder.
We also looked at artefacts in the Museum from the time of the fire.We saw the fire hook which was used to pull the houses down.It was very long and looked very heavy.
Everyone enjoyed the day.Mrs Jackson was very proud of her class as they all behaved very well on the Underground train and in the museum.

London Landmarks

Our first topic is called London Landmarks and over the holiday our homework was to make a model of a famous landmark in London.

We have had some amazing models brought in to school this week with many different buildings represented.We have also enjoyed reading about how they were made and why they are famous.

Pumpkin Soup

Have a look at our pictures to see the enormous pumpkin we grew on the school allotment.We also grew carrots,parsnips and leeks.We decided to make these into a soup before the holidays.We had to be very strong to cut into the pumpkin as it had a very hard skin.We then used some of it to make our soup.Mrs Raval made some flatbread to go with it.

It was delicious.

We have now finished for the holidays.

The Foggy Day

On Monday we came to school in the fog.We then decided to go outside to experience this.This then inspired us to collect many adjective and adverbs to help us describe this weather.
We then wrote this class poem which we shared in the sharing assembly.
The Foggy Day
We are foggy,soggy,and wet.
It is freezing cold.
Look the leaves are damply falling down.
Can you see the cloudy soft sky?
Quick inside,it`s too cold and chilly for us.

Welcome back after the half term holiday.This half term is always a busy one.We are looking at the Vikings for our History topic and already the children have produced some excellent posters for their homework.
We will also be visitng the Barbican on the 15th November for a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.We are looking forward to that.

Olympic games

Year 2 have been learning about the Olympic Games.We made up some of our own games this week.We worked in five groups and used bats,balls hoops and bean bags.

The Year6 children came and helped us.We had fun improving our PE skills and fitness.

Instructions

We have been learning how to write instructions using bossy verbs.These are verbs which tell you what to do.
We made some sandwiches ,either jam or cucumber, and photographed the different things we did.We then wrote the instructions as a draft.We then read our sentences and made them more interesting to read with describing words and clear instructions.

We have had a very busy week learning about the arts of Africa.We heard a storyteller from Kenya tell us how the Leopard got its spots.We made some story mats to help us tell stories and took part in a dance workshop.

Plants Around Our School

We have been exploring the school garden to see what plants we could find. We looked at the colour, the shape and the variety of plants growing by our classroom. We took photographs and made drawings of what we saw. This is the first lesson in our Science work on growing plants.

We have started our Summer term with some work on our heritage.We have taken part in different activities including playing a game called Beetle drive,wearing the colours of our Union flag,playing football and cricket.

On Wednesday we celebrated with a party on our field.It was great fun.Thank you to all our parents for providing our food including some amazing cupcakes.

For our last blog this term we would like to share 2 things with you from this week.

We hope you enjoyed our Happy Hat concert.

On Monday we planted some potatoes in a big pot outside our classroom.We learnt about how they grow,and when they will be ready to eat.We will have to make sure that they are watered, so that we can eat some delicious potatoes in the Summer.

Fairlop Waters

We visited Fairlop Waters where Mr Cranston a local storyteller showed us the adventure playgrounds near the lake.

We made some models of these back in school.We then wrote some stories about these places.Mr Cranston visited us on Monday and we gave our stories to him.He is going to use some of them in a book he is writing.We are looking forward to reading his stories.

On Tuesday we had our class assembly for our parents.It was about traditional tales.We told stories,sang songs and danced with Pinocchio a puppet.

Keeping fit

Every day we take part in Take 12, a PE activity which we do in the classroom.We have learnt all the dances now and enjoy moving to the music.It is helping us to keep fit in Year 1 .

Our Science work this half term is about Sounds.We have explored the sounds around our school and heard loud and soft sounds.We have been learning how to make sounds with our voices as we sing.
We have investigated how different instruments need to be played in different ways to make their sounds.
We played a guitar by plucking,a drum by beating,shakers by shaking and learnt that you blow a clarinet reed to make the sound

We have started back after having a restful holiday and are starting our new topic called Down our Street.This is about our local area and the places near our school.
We have been on 2 walks already.Our first one was along Dryden close to look at all the different types of houses.We then had our second walk where we walked up to New North Road and across to Manford Way.We were looking at different buildings and recording them on a map.We took some photographs to remind us of the walk.

Our visits

This week has been a very busy one with us going on two visits.
We went on the 150 bus all the way in to Ilford on Wednesday to visit Valentines Mansion.It was an amazing house with rooms and grounds to explore.
On Friday we went to the Drama Centre in South Woodford,where a lady called Kate greeted us dressed in a Victorian costume.She acted out the part of a lady called Letitia and we had to pretend to be Victorian children.We learnt about all the jobs they had to do including sweeping the chimneys and working in a mine.It was very hard work!

We had a lovely time visiting the elderly ladies and gentleman at the day centre.We sang some Autumn and Counting songs,and they very kindly gave us a drink and a biscuit.They talked to us about the games they played with when they were young.One lady told us about playing hopscotch when she was young.
We have invited them to our Christmas concert.

We took 2 hoops and lay them on the carpet to make a Venn diagram

International Week

This week we have been learning about our world and enjoying hearing stories from different countries.We have enjoyed reading Handa`s Surprise,a story from Kenya.Handa takes a basket of fruit to her friend but on the way animals take the fruit without her knowing, and when she gets to Akeyo`s village she has a surprise.
Miss Jackson, Mrs Gupta and Diego`s mum all told us stories in their home language.
It was fun to hear words spoken in a different way.

Potatoes

The potatoes we planted have grown and were ready for harvesting this week.
Mr Jackson our gardener helped us by putting each tub in the wheelbarrow.That way we could collect all the potatoes.We did not know until then, whether any potatoes had grown.
We were amazed.We counted over 65 potatoes from our two planters.
We each held one.We then cooked some of them.They were delicious.

Broad Beans

Earlier this year we planted some broad bean seeds in the school allotment.
They grew very well and we checked on them through the year.
Last week we checked on them and they were ready for picking.
We then opened the pods and found beautiful green beans inside a soft bed.That protected the beans.We recycled the pods in our box to go to the allotment compost bin.
We then cooked them in a small amount of water.
We let them cool down and then we tasted them.
They were delicious.
It was lovely to have such fresh beans to taste.
The next plants we have to harvest are the potatoes growing outside our classroom.

Moving cars

We are bringing our Moving Cars home today.You can make them move at home with a balloon or by pushing them.
We learnt all about Science in this work, as it taught us how pushes and pulls can move things.
Also we learnt that the air in the balloon will make our vehicle move as it comes out.
We had races with our cars in the playground.

Teddy Bears Picnic

Both 1A and 1J have just had a lovely picnic with our teddy bears on the field.The sun was shining,we had food and drink, and the teddy bears were smiling.
This was to conclude our work on Toys.We really enjoyed this work as we learnt so much about different toys and made moving cars powered by balloons.

The Pea and the Princess

We have been reading a story called the Pea and the Princess. In this version the Pea decides who the Prince will marry.
We wrote our own stories and published them.

Playground Planters

This term Class 1J is going to look after two of the playground planters.Mr Jackson, our gardener, has prepared the soil and got it ready for planting.We already had some strawberries growing in one of them ,so we decided to plant vegetables in there.We were surprised at the different sizes and colours of the seeds.
We planted flowers in the other one.
Everyone took turns to put the seeds in the soil.We then had to give them lots of water to start them growing.
We covered the planters with netting to protect the plants until they are bigger.

Outdoor PE

On Wednesday Mr Latham taught us several new games that we can play in the playground.He used hoops and cones.
We had to run in to different hoops as he called the colour.
He also taught us a great game called Smugglers.The class was divided into 2 teams and the Smugglers had to steal the cones from the Goodies.We used up lots of energy playing that game.

Last week was our class assembly.
As we are learning about Celebrations we decided to do our assembly on the Chinese New Year.
We learnt two songs and told the story of how the New Year gets its name, as it changes every year.
We made animal and Emperor masks to wear.We all took on a different part in the story.
We had Chinese music playing and used instruments when we sang.

A busy time

Our Local Area

In our Creative curriculum work this half term,we have been learning about our Local Area.
We started by looking at our school and then the playground.
We learnt about how to make a Survey and to use maps.
We then learnt about the different types of homes we live in and the names of them.
We learnt we lived in:semi-detached houses,caravans, flats,bungalows and terraced houses.
Today we went for a walk around the streets beside our school.
We went in small groups and we each had to survey the numbers of homes in our group.
We took photographs of the different types.
In our walk we saw :2 blocks of flats,20 semi-detached houses,20 bungalows,and 18 terraced houses.

Our Favourite Traditional Tale

We have linked our Literacy work with Numeracy this week with some work on Traditional Tales.
We chose 4 tales we have heard over the last few weeks.They were The Gingerbread man,Goldilocks and the Three Bears,the Three Little Pigs, and Jack and the Beanstalk.
We had to choose the story we liked best and drew a picture of a character on a square of paper.
We then put it on the card with the name of the story.
The favourite story in Class 1J is......The Gingerbread Man.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Over the last two weeks we have enjoyed reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.We acted out the story,and thought about the characters.
Everyone had a go at writing about how Jack felt as he climbed up the Beanstalk.
Some children wrote that his knees were shaking,and he felt scared.We shared our writing, reading his thoughts to the class.
We then decided that we were going to change our role play area in to the Giant`s Castle.We have made the castle walls with large card and painted a picture of the castle.
It will be finished next week but our pictures show some of the things we have made.

Welcome back to 1J after the holidays.We did enjoy the snowy weather,
but are now glad that we can go out at playtime.

Pinata

Before Christmas Mrs Duro made us a brilliant snowman Pinata.We learnt that children in Mexico have these at Christmas and Birthdays.
Hidden inside the Pinata is a surprise for the children,but the only way to get it is to hit it with our fists.
Last Wednesday we decided to have a go at breaking the Pinata.Mrs Duro helped us and as you can see it was fun to hit it.
We were very excited when little packets of sweets fell out of the Pinata.

Superfruits

We have had a great time over the past few weeks making our role play area into a Superfuits Cafe.
We tasted lots of different types of fruit.
We made some very careful paintings of a pineapple to display in our cafe.
We also made some large fruits using tissue paper.
We designed a fruity tablecloth,and made special tabards for the waitress,waiter and chef to wear.
We made up an advert to show in the sharing assembly about the cafe.

We have really enjoyed learning about London,our home city.

Vegetable Soup

We have been reading a book called Oliver`s Vegetables.
It is about a boy called Oliver who visits his grandparents and picks different vegetables each day to eat.
We talked about different vegetables and tasted some.
We then decided to make vegetable soup.
Thank you to the parents who contributed.
We all took it in turns to cut up the vegetables and Mrs Jackson cooked it.
We then tasted it.
Everyone liked it and wanted more!

Welcome to all the children in Class 1J.

We are learning lots of new things in Year 1 and have already enjoyed learning about our bodies,and the names of the different parts.
We have been singing lots of new songs and learning to use the bead strings for counting.Over this year we hope to share with you all the exciting work we are doing.
Already we are taking photographs of our class and of some of the things our bodies can do.

We are sending our first piece of homework home this week.Please could you trim it and glue it into our new homework books.
Our homework needs to be back in school by next Wednesday.

Nature Sculptures

Our class have been learning about the work of Andy Goldsworthy.He is a sculptor who uses natural objects in his work.We saw some pictures of his work and noticed that he uses lots of different shapes including circles, spirals and ovals.
We made our own sculptures using leaves, flowers,and twigs collected from outside our classroom.We took photographs of them as they do not last very long once they have been picked.
We then arranged all our pictures in a spiral shape.
We really enjoyed learning about a famous sculptor and his work.

Bollywood dancing

Our Plants

We have had a great time this term planting lots of plants outside our classroom.The potatoes are growing very well and one plant has already started to make the flowers.Once these flowers have died we know the potatoes are ready to be dug up.We hope this will be before the summer holidays.

Last week we planted our tomatoes in two grow bags.We have to water them every day and check to see if they too have made flowers.These flowers will then become delicious tomatoes.

We also hope that the weather will be sunny as the light and warmth will help the plants to grow.

All this planting helps us learn about where our food comes from and we are looking forward to tasting them very soon.

Measuring Maths

For our homework last week we had to make a long paper strip using one piece of A4 paper.This was quite a challenge as we had to decide how wide to cut the strips and the best way to join them together.
We then brought them to school.
Today we decided to find out which of us made the longest strip.
We went outside to do this.
We had to help each other as it was quite windy.
We had to be fair in our investigating,so every strip had to start by the yellow line.
Mrs Brackett helped us, as she had to make a chalk mark where our strip ended.
We then had to stand at that place to compare our strips.
Mrs Jackson then took some photos as a record of our work.
Look at our pictures.

Observing Plants

Everyone in our class has chosen two plants to observe.One is a tree in our school grounds and the other is a flowering plant in the garden by our classroom.We have learnt that Scientists observe when they are learning about the world, and we are going to do this with our plants.We took some pictures of the trees we are looking and some of the flowers.

We have been very busy this week.The planters in the playground have been filled with soil and we have started planting them.
We have one for vegetables and in there we have planted runner beans,broad beans,carrots,strawberries ,parsley and radishes.
We have taken lots of photographs to keep a record of how the plants are growing.

Summer term

We are all looking forward to the warmer weather this term and a chance to get outside.Our Science topic is all about growing plants and we have already started planting.

Our potatoes are growing and we have now started to "earth them".This is when we cover them with earth so that the plant grows stronger.We have to water them every day and are looking forward to the potatoes later this term.

Potato project

Our class have been chosen along with other schools in the country to take part in a Growing Potato project.This is the second year our school has done this.
We were sent 2 types of seed potatoes earlier this term and we had to leave them on the windowsill so they could start chitting.This is where the seed potatoes start making shoots which have to harden, ready to be planted in the ground.
They were ready this week and we planted them.
We planted two Vales Emerald potatoes in one pot and two Rocket potatoes in the other.
We had to plant them at the bottom of the pot and cover it loosely with soil.Then we watered them really well and put them outside our classroom.
We hope they will start to grow over the holiday with their first shoots.

Our Visit

Last week Year 1 had a visit to the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood.This was to help us with our history work on toys in the past.
When we arrived we had a look around at the toys in the cases on the first floor.There were lots of moving toys to look at.
We then went and took part in a workshop on Moving Toys.We had a chance to play with lots of different moving toys,and we learnt how they worked.
Then the teacher showed us a very old toy called a Zoeotrope.This toy is very clever as it shows moving pictures when you spin it.
We then played with a smaller one in our groups and took it in turns to spin it and watch the pictures.
We then had to stop for lunch.
After lunch we only had a short time to look at the museum again before we had to go back on the coach back to school.
We all enjoyed our visit to the Museum as we saw lots lots of interesting toys.

Making Tents

Class 1J have really enjoyed their homework over the last few weeks as they have been making lots of things.
In our Numeracy work on Measuring we learnt how to measure things using cubes and beads.Then we measured using our ruler.
Our homework that week was to make a tent for any of our toys at home.As you can see the class made lots of different tents.They were very colourful and everyone was different.

The Enormous Watermelon

To help us celebrate World book week we have been reading the Enormous Watermelon by
Brenda Parkes and Judith Smith
All our work this week has been linked to this book.
We started by thinking about the word enormous and drew lots of enormous things like a giant and a giraffe.
Then we enjoyed reading the book and getting to know the story.
In the story old Mother Hubbard calls lots of Nursery Rhyme characters to help her pull it home.So we then sang lots of Nursery Rhymes and learnt about Little Miss Muffet and Jack and Jill.
We looked at a slice of watermelon and tasted it, and learnt lots of interesting facts about watermelons.
Did you know that they grow in Spain and Brazil and they are vegetables!!
On Thursday we all dressed up as book characters and our teachers were Jack and Jill and Little Miss Muffet.
We have really enjoyed this book and will be finding another exciting book to share in our class very soon.

Cinderella Assembly
We enjoyed making our own version of Cinderella.We had 5 Cinderellas and Prince Charmings,and a Stepsister and Stepbrother.
We told the story using drama ,music and dance,and had a great time dancing at the ball.
Like all fairy tales the prince found his Cinderella in the end, and they all lived happily ever after.
Many thanks to all the parents who came,we hope you enjoyed it.

We have settled back in to class after our holiday.This term will be another busy one as we have lots of exciting activities planned.

Our topic this term is In and Around our school.

We are learning about Light and Dark in Science, and the history of toys later this term.

We will be visiting the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood in March.

Thank you to all our parents who came to our class talk.

We are busy getting ready for our class assembly on Tuesday 3rd February at 10.20.

Aaaarrgghh Spider

We have been reading the book Aaaarrgghh Spider by Lydia Monks.It tells the story of a lonely spider who wants to live in a house as their pet.He finds lots of ways to get into the house,even spinning beautiful shiny webs.
We made spiders,drew webs and made moving pictures to help us tell the story.We had a Spider day on Friday and we had fun with Spider maths games,decorating biscuits as spiders and dressing up as a spider.
We said goodbye to Miss Maguire and Miss Vali who had been working with us for a month.We will miss them.

Autumn Pictures

We had fun making our Autumn pictures in the half term holiday.
We collected leaves,seeds,conkers and berries to make our pictures show the colours of Autumn.

This week we have welcomed two Student teachers to our class who will be working with us for 4 weeks.
They will be getting to know us and all our names and will then take small groups in our class on activities for Science,Literacy and Numeracy.
This week we are writing a special booklet to welcome a new pupil to our class and looking at how we use shapes in school and at home.
We will be starting our Science topic on Sound and Hearing and starting an exciting project in Design and Technology where we will learn how to use sliders and levers to make Moving Pictures.
Thank you to all the children who have brought in some amazing Autumn pictures using leaves,berries and seeds-we will photograph these and post the pictures next week.
